The City Lab Methodology

The City Lab is a methodology developed by the Morgenstadt Initiative to create a detailed profile of each Pilot City in terms of its sustainability. The aim is to gain a systematic understanding of the city and how it works. That interdisciplinary approach allows our researchers to identify key challenges and areas of innovation for the sustainable development of the city.

The city profile presents strengths, weaknesses, and areas of need of the urban system. It also identifies potentials, opportunities, and risks based on three indicators:

Performance Indicators: What is the status of the sustainability performance?

Action Fields: How is the city coping with sustainability requirements?

Impact Factors: Why do some strategies work and others do not?

During the entire analysis and assessment process, the point of view of local stakeholders and experts is included through workshops, consultations, site-visits, and interviews.

Based on the city profile, MGI creates a roadmap with proposals for innovative measures to make the Pilot City more environmentally sustainable and resilient to climate change.
